The letter did give the president of Bancolombia

Carlos Raul Yepes says the message of his daughter led him to decide to enjoy the family.
Since when became president of Bancolombia, five years ago, Carlos Raul Yepes knew his tenure in that position would not be until retirement, as often it happens in this sector, where a history of more than 30 years in that position is not uncommon.

However, in the accounts of Yepes was not a letter that her eldest daughter wrote in September last year, which led him to question her priorities in life: your family, your health, have a quiet life as anyone else without depriving yourself of everyday life, or simple basics.

These reasons led to his resignation from the presidency of one of the largest banks in the country, which makes it a very prominent position, not only from the point of view of the figures, but from a qualitative point where the public has perceived that you can make a lot closer to people banking.

In his decision to leave the bank his eldest daughter had a great influence.

I would have liked to stay on the bench, but these positions are very demanding and I wore out a lot physically. I stopped going to movies, frequenting friends, to the same family. Began my illnesses and the third time admitted me to the clinic last year, my oldest daughter wrote me a letter (September), in which he said, "I want you to see me graduate, you see marry me, you load my children, but as you're acting and assuming your responsibilities now you're not going to achieve. " That hurt me a lot and I wondered what he was handing things, I privé family, to watch my son play football, to receive grades in school, because he always had a responsibility. So, after 22 years on the bench, I decided it was time for retirement.

And how he took the family?

My daughter's letter prompted a family conversation in which we look what those priorities are in life. I did not want neither power nor silver, we saw that my job duties are higher than my physical condition. Then we come to the conclusion that he had to do those things that were postponed for years, like playing piano, learning Italian, keep talking about peace and coexistence, civic culture, and even eat ice cream with the lady, that is, again simple and basic.

How difficult is leaving a position like that?

The decision surprised the imaginary ours because one has two outputs: retire or they throw it, and I did not want any of those things. If my bosses are happy, not me I'm going to be life or want to take me out at any time. Now, a fundamental aspect is the responsibility and worked a lifetime to be the most dispensable bank official, and there directives knew what I thought, where I moved, with whom he always spoke an open book. If I say 'give the bank tomorrow', it is in the best condition because there is a dedicated management team, informed and committed to the strategy, and that is very valuable.

Will you still linked to the organization?

No. I think in life you have to know how to make transitions and closing cycles. Of course if they need my support'll be there because I owe much gratitude. At this point the time will be devoted to regain health, to restore all physical. In parallel, I dream to take my son to football and my daughter to work. I want to return to the simple and basic, but there are higher goals, such as a bridge of coexistence in the country. I would like that.

Do you think people understood well what the most humane banking?

Yes, and in a thousand ways. When I now see that a company comes out with a zero cost strategy, I came with that bank five years ago, and it was not an issue of brand or marketing. In the end, human banking is no different to do long-term relationships based on respect and trust, and all the group's decisions must be passed by that filter.

How do you see Bancolombia in five years?

I would like to continue to be an important player in the economy, a social actor who was not playing politics, but defining public policy, with new products and services from innovation. Of course the big challenge are the threats that technology brings, but I think we are called to continue to innovate and to deliver people what they need. The bank today will not be the same in five years, their incomes have the same origin, and there comes our ability to reinvent ourselves. We are prepared for that to happen.
